Protecting Our Wild Burros

Tuesday, November 25 2014 by Editor
HSUS logo For years, The HSUS has been critical of the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) wild horse and burro program— consistently pressing the agency to make fundamental changes that allow the program to focus on on-the-range management practices. Unfortunately, the program remains characterized by a cycle of rounding up and removing animals that has resulted in approximately 47,000 of our nation’s iconic wild horses and burros being kept in holding facilities throughout the United States, a debacle that cost taxpayers over $46 million last year alone.   The BLM recognizes that there are simply too many animals in holding facilities, and they are trying to solve this problem — something we at The HSUS applaud.
